If you’re planning a once-in-a-lifetime Galapagos expedition cruise, one of the first (and most exciting) decisions you’ll make is: Which itinerary should I choose?
It’s a question we hear often—and with good reason. At Ecoventura, we offer two thoughtfully designed routes aboard our luxury expedition yachts—Origin, Theory & Evolve. And here’s the truth: you can’t go wrong. Whether you choose Itinerary A: Beaches & Bays or Itinerary B: Volcanic Wonders, you’re in for an unforgettable journey filled with extraordinary wildlife, dramatic landscapes, and guided excursions that bring the magic of the Galapagos to life.
A Tale of Two Itineraries
Deciding between our two itineraries is like choosing between sunrise and sunset—each beautiful in its own way. Both showcase the biodiversity and geological wonders that make the Galapagos Islands one of the most unique places on Earth. Still, if you’re hoping to see specific animals or landscapes, knowing the differences can help you pick the perfect route.
For example:
- The waved albatross, one of the archipelago’s most iconic birds, nests exclusively on Española Island (Itinerary A) from April through December.
- The flightless cormorant, found nowhere else on Earth, can only be seen along the western coasts of Isabela and Fernandina Islands (Itinerary B).
- Other favorites like blue-footed boobies, sea lions, marine iguanas, and Galápagos penguins are seen on both itineraries, though their behaviors—such as mating, nesting, and caring for young—may vary by season.

Itinerary A: Beaches & Bays (Southern & Central Route)
For travelers drawn to sun-drenched beaches, calm turquoise waters, and charming sea lions frolicking along the shore, Itinerary A delivers a more tropical, relaxed atmosphere. Think palm-fringed sands, vibrant birdlife, and snorkeling in crystal-clear coves.
Wildlife & experience highlights include:
- Seasonal sightings of the waved albatross (April–December).
- Frigatebirds, land iguanas, and blue-footed boobies.
- Long white-sand beaches perfect for wildlife photography, swimming, and snorkeling.
- Visits to Española, Santa Fe, and San Cristobal Islands.

Itinerary B: Volcanic Wonders (Northern & Western Route)
Prefer more dramatic, untamed terrain? Itinerary B takes you into the volcanically active regions of the archipelago, with stark lava fields, black sand beaches, and surreal geological formations that feel like stepping onto another planet.
Wildlife & experience highlights include:
- Close encounters with Galapagos penguins and flightless cormorants
- Red-footed boobies, fur seals, and large colonies of marine iguanas
- Guided walks across ancient lava flows
- Stops at Isabela, Fernandina, and Genovesa Islands

Key Differences: Terrain & Wildlife
The biggest difference between the two routes lies in the landscape and exclusive wildlife.
- Itinerary A: lush beaches and a relaxed, tropical vibe. Best for spotting waved albatross and enjoying pristine beaches.
- Itinerary B: Rugged coastlines, lava fields, and dramatic volcanic terrain. Exclusive access to flightless cormorants, red-footed boobies, and active volcanoes.
No matter which you choose, both itineraries feature up-close wildlife encounters found nowhere else on earth.
