Plant a Native Tree in the Galapagos with Ecoventura

In honor of Earth Day, we launched an exciting new activity that invites our guests to participate in a reforestation project. Held for the first time this year on April 24th, this initiative takes place at either Rancho Primicias or Rancho El Chato, alternating weekly between the two locations. This activity is available on both Itinerary A – Beaches & Bays (Thursday) and Itinerary B – Volcanic Wonders (Saturday), ensuring that all our guests have the opportunity to contribute to the environment.

Our continuous Commitment to the Galapagos Islands

Our reforestation project aims to plant at least 1100 trees between June 2024 and June 2025. Since its inception, we have planted approximately 159 saplings, each representing a passenger who participated in the activity. This ongoing program is a testament to our commitment to protecting the environment and fostering respect for nature.

An Immersive Experience in Santa Cruz Highlands

When visiting Puerto Ayora, guests will traverse the diverse vegetation zones of the highlands of Santa Cruz. This lush area, rich in greenery at higher elevations, provides a stunning backdrop for our reforestation activities. The morning unfolds with an extraordinary visit to either Rancho Primicias or El Chato, privately-owned ranches where majestic tortoises roam freely. These gentle giants, which can grow to exceed 500 pounds, offer an awe-inspiring spectacle for all.

Guests can explore enchanting lava tunnels, providing a truly immersive experience. Here, guests have the opportunity to join Ecoventura’s reforestation project by planting a tree. This rewarding activity allows our guests to leave a positive legacy for future generations and raise awareness of the critical need to plant trees and protect forests worldwide.

The Importance of Native Plants

The Galapagos Islands’ unique ecosystem benefits immensely from native plants. During the reforestation activity, our Naturalist Guides educate guests on the significance of these plants and their impact on the environment. The plants selected for this activity include several endemic and native species: Chala, Matazarnos, Scalecia, Guayabillo, and Romerillo. These species are integral to the local ecosystem, offering essential benefits such as habitat for wildlife, soil stabilization, and climate regulation.

Chala: Known for its resilience, this plant helps stabilize the soil and provides a habitat for various wildlife species.

Matazarnos: This plant plays a crucial role in maintaining the soil structure and preventing erosion.

Scalecia: Often referred to as the “daisy tree,” Scalecia is vital for supporting the local biodiversity.

Guayabillo: A fruit-bearing plant that offers food and shelter for native animals.

Romerillo: This plant contributes to the overall health of the forest by supporting diverse plant and animal life.
