Preserving Paradise: Ecoventura & the Charles Darwin Foundation Partner for Conservation and Community in 2025

At Ecoventura, we believe that unforgettable travel experiences should go hand in hand with protecting the fragile ecosystems that make the Galapagos Islands so extraordinary. That’s why we’re proud to continue our long-standing partnership with the Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF)—supporting science, conservation, education, and the local community through meaningful action.

In 2025, several key initiatives are being prioritized, thanks in part to contributions from the Galapagos Biodiversity and Education for Sustainability Fund (GBESF)—a fund created to provide long-term support for the protection of the archipelago. Our guests and partners play a crucial role in this success, and we’re excited to share some highlights of what’s ahead.

Restoring the Opuntia Plant Population on South Plaza

The Opuntia cactus is a vital species in the Galapagos ecosystem, especially for sustaining the land iguana population. In South Plaza, this native plant is undergoing a strategic restoration process. A thriving cactus community is a signal of ecological balance and the revival of native flora and fauna.

Creating an Ecological Corridor on Floreana Island

On Floreana, efforts are underway to reestablish habitat for the native mockingbirds, a species under threat. This involves planting essential native vegetation and combating invasive species—especially the vampire avian fly, one of the biggest dangers to land birds across the archipelago.

Long-Term Shark Monitoring and Research

CDF scientists are conducting critical shark research within the Galapagos Marine Reserve and the broader Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP). This research has expanded to multiple shark species, including blacktip, whitetip, scalloped hammerhead, Galapagos silky, tiger and blue sharks.  The team studies populations of coastal and oceanic sharks within the GMR, recognizing the vital role of the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) as a globally important region for shark conservation

Experiential Camping for Local Youth

In partnership with ECOS and Fundación Scalesia, a dedicated 2,100-square-meter campsite on Santa Cruz now hosts experiential outdoor learning for children and teens. This initiative connects local youth to nature, fosters environmental stewardship, and is expanding in 2025 with new infrastructure: solar lighting, improved signage, and more inclusive access.

Scholarships for Island Students

Thanks to continued fundraising, two new students were awarded scholarships in May 2025:

  • Suanny (20) – Studying Marketing
  • Selena (18) – Studying Naval Engineering

These scholarships, co-funded by Ecoventura and CDF, empower talented students from the islands to pursue higher education and become future stewards of the Galapagos.

Looking Ahead: December 2025 Donation Cruise

The next Donation Cruise is scheduled for early December 2025, sponsored by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. This special voyage will focus on the Floreana Island restoration project, raising awareness and funds for the island’s ecological corridor and habitat recovery.

Impact to Date

In 2024, the GBESF raised $158,000, contributing to a total of over $630,000 donated by Ecoventura since the initiative began. These funds support not only CDF’s scientific research but also the efforts of the Galapagos National Park in monitoring and surveillance, and educational programs that build capacity among the next generation of conservation leaders.

“Partnering with Ecoventura made it possible for us to showcase the beauty and fragility of the Galapagos while raising significant funds for the Charles Darwin Foundation’s first endowed fund. Their generosity, flexibility, and exceptional service were instrumental in the success of this expedition.”
